Benfica defender ready to swap Portugal for England
David Luiz is hoping his recent performances will spark a £25 million race from La Liga and Premier League heavyweights to secure his signature, Goal.com UK can reveal.
The Benfica defender's impressive displays have placed him on the summer shopping lists of Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona - all of whom have sent scouts to watch him play.
The 23 year-old's agent Giuliano Bertolucci confirmed to Goal.com UK Luiz's desire move to one of Europe’s top sides.
He said: “Everybody wants to take a step further on. Everybody likes to play in England or Spain.
“His preference? Everyone wants to play in the Premier League and La Liga. But we have to see the offers and who’s available to take him. A lot of people have been watching, but officially I don’t have anything from anybody. We will see what happens.
“After, we will see the future. Who knows what will come. I cannot be foolish because I don’t have anything concrete. Everybody is asking me but officially I don’t have anything concrete.”
Luiz, who joined Benfica from Brazilian club Vitoria three years ago, has formed a strong pairing with compatriot Luisao at the heart of the defence. At 6ft 2in and with a good turn of pace, he is equally comfortable at left back.
This versatility will appeal to all the watching sides, but with rumours of Nemanja Vidic’s summer exit refusing to go away and a lack of cover for Patrice Evra, he would certainly boost United’s ranks.
Madrid are on the hunt for a solid full-back to support marauding winger Marcelo, while concern over the form and fitness of Chelsea’s John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho has increased Carlo Ancelotti’s interest.
Big spenders Manchester City have also eyed a triple raid on the Estadio da Luz, with Luiz, Argentine international winger Angel Di Maria and red hot Paraguayan forward Oscar Cardozo all on their radar.
Bertolucci was confident that this flexibility would make Luiz a success if he left Benfica in the summer transfer window.
“He adapts well. He’s very at home in Portugal. He’s very educated, has a strong mentality, adapting is not a problem for him,” Bertolucci said.
“He speaks a little English. He’s a flexible player who can play in different positions. Yes, of course that helps increase his possibilities and further his career.
“It’s not a problem if he stays at Benfica. He’s happy at Benfica. Of course, everybody wants something different and wants to take steps to improve themselves."

Benfica's highly-rated centre-back David Luiz could turn in to "one of the best defenders in the business" if he moved to Manchester United, according to Goal.com Portugal's Luis Mira.
The £25 million rated Brazilian stopper is on the summer shopping lists of United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona after an impressive season.
Speaking to Goal.com UK, Mira believed the former Brazil Under-20 international reminded him of Rio Ferdinand and would reach his potential under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Goal.com UK: How impressive has David Luiz been during his time with Benfica and how much money would interested teams need to offer for his services?
Luis Mira: David Luiz took some time to settle to football in Europe and it was not until his third season in Portugal that he started playing on a regular basis.
Since 2008/09, however, he has been absolutely vital in Benfica's backline, with his best displays coming under the new boss Jorge Jesus. I would say he could be sold for a fee in the region of €25-30 million.
Goal.com UK: Benfica are top of the Portuguese league, how important has Luiz been to this?
Mira: Luiz has been playing a very important role in Benfica's success story this season and he seems to connect really well with Luisao at the heart of the defence. This would help explain why they have the best defence in the league.
Goal.com UK: Could you describe Luiz's playing style and which positions he plays in?
Mira: Luiz has mostly played as centre-back, his favourite position, but he has also been deployed on the left side of the defence, where he has shown some qualities. He was also used as a defensive midfielder once or twice.
At the age of 23, one of the most interesting things about him is his composure. He has shown good concentration and decision making, though sometimes he goes off the mark in some challenges he makes.
The worst about him is undoubtedly the fact that, at least at Benfica, he runs with the ball way too many times, since he has some technique and is good at passing. Sometimes, he just loses the ball when trying to move past an opponent and leaves his team in a tough situation.
Goal.com UK: Which Premier League defender does he remind you of the most?
Mira: He reminds me of Rio Ferdinand and Daniel Agger. He is a very fast defender, he outruns attackers most of the times and is also very calm at the back - though sometimes he goes off the mark in some challenges he makes.
He is never scared to run with the ball and sometimes he does it so often one might think he plays in the midfield. He has good technique and he also shoots from distance when given the chance.
Goal.com UK: What is David Luiz's personality like? Would he deal with the pressure of playing for a top Premier League team?
Mira: He is a very calm guy, does not draw too much media attention on him, and is also very religious. He played well against big names in the Europa League this season, so I guess he is ready for a bigger challenge.
Goal.com UK: Chelsea and Manchester United in particular have some great centre-backs. If he moved to either side, is he good enough to push for a starting place immediately or would he be a substitute?
Mira: As I mentioned before, Luiz still has two big problems: the fact he runs with the ball too often and makes some dangerous challenges inside the area. Joining Manchester United would be better for him as I am sure Alex Ferguson would nurture him into one of the best defenders in the business.
I would not say he would immediately push for a starting place, especially considering that at Benfica he always plays alongside Portuguese-speaking centre-backs. It could take him some time to get used to a new centre-back partner.

Benfica Slap £25m Price On David Luiz In Wake Of Interest From Manchester United And Chelsea - Report
Manchester United and Chelsea have been asked to stump up £25 million if they want to sign highly-rated Benfica defender David Luiz, according to the Daily Mail.
The 22-year-old has been watched extensively by both clubs in recent times, with United in particular keen on the Brazilian as both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have missed a number of games this season.
Chelsea have also closely monitored Luiz, who is a former Brazilian Under-20 international, but with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan also reportedly interested the Portuguese side are looking to hold out for a sizeable transfer fee.
Luiz has played in 25 of his side's 26 league games this season, in which Benfica have conceded just 14 goals. Os Gloriosos are currently on course to win their first league title since 2005.
